2009 Tennessee Legislative Update:
Here are bill summaries of legislation introduced to this point (February 2009) that appear potentially to impact AAUP interests.
SB0568 by Gresham, HB1490 by Brooks H: As introduced, requires board of regents and University of Tennessee board of trustees to study impact of mandatory American history class requirement and make any necessary recommendations for change. - Amends TCA Section 49-7-110.
HB0951 by Winningham, SB0918 by Burks: As introduced, extends certain discretionary powers to the board of regents and the University of Tennessee when purchasing or acquiring software for use restricted solely to academic teaching or research. - Amends TCA Title 12, Chapter 4, Part 1.
The first one seems clear-cut as a matter of legislative intrusion into curricular matters, though the intrusion already exists in the form of the requirement. The second one may be something of concern to those who are involved in that process.2005 Tennessee Legislative Update
