Below is the letter to Ms. Summerford of the Tennessee Education Association referencing the TEA Teacher Rally for March 5, 2011, in downtown Nashville:

Dear Ms. Summerford:

On February 26, 2011 at its spring meeting, the Tennessee Conference of the American Association of University Professors voted to endorse the TEA Teacher Rally called by the Tennessee Education Association for March 5, 2011, in downtown Nashville.

We believe that in Tennessee's current political climate, educators and advocates across levels and disciplines ought to band together to oppose proposed legislation that could hurt us all. To support TEA's work in this regard, we hope the event on March 5th is well-attended and sends a message to our legislators and their constituents, a large number of whom are either parents of students or students themselves (or both) who stand to be hurt by the results of what is obviously a nationally orchestrated attack on those of us who care deeply about their education.

We encourage you and your colleagues to attend the TEA Teacher Rally with your family and friends. Most legislators do listen to the reasoned voices of their constituents; their future political careers depend upon their doing so.

Sincerely,

H. Coleman McGinnis
President and Director of Government Relations
Tennessee Conference, AAUP
